Williams led the SAR team that was called out from Spirit to assist CSN Cardinal. His team numbered seven, including himself. Amongst the team was Kate Somerville, Damien Archer, Fred Fisher and Tom Barker.

Williams identified Cardinal's attackers as being a group of scavengers and opportunists, who had gone after the ship hoping that it might contain items they could easily sell. Williams was on the verge of identifying what had become of the ship's invaders when Archer set off a booby trap, causing a series of bombs to detonate. Williams was killed when the resulting explosion spaced him from the bridge, through the main viewport.
