Short was serving aboard Ifrit when the carrier took part in Operation Menelaus. He became suspicious of Hawke's behaviour when the captain refused to aid Griffin after Parks requested it.

After Hawke allowed the Pandoran forces to board Ifrit, Short decided that the man had either gone mad or was siding with the enemy. He ordered that Hawke be confined to quarters, sending Nelson Lee and Tammy Dawes to escort the commodore from the bridge. Short was killed when Hawke shot both Lee and Dawes with a laser pistol, before turning the gun on Short himself.
