Both Jed and Estelle signed up for military service in their teens, Jed opting to enlist in the army, rather than follow his sister into the navy. He served in the CMI for a number of years, until an accident during a live fire exercise shattered his knee cap and forced him out of the service.

He has since found menial work tasks back home on Tilli.

It was revealed during a flashback that Jed worked as a mechanic on Tilli, until he was sacked for failing to perform at the level that was expected of him. He had spent every day since pretending to get up and go to work, to save face with his parents and look for jobs elsewhere.

Part of his motivation for enlisting in the army was to acquire and improve his skills as a mechanic, to prove to his former employer that he was an accomplished worker.

Along with his father and mother, Jed fled to Sol and was taken in by the Dodds family, in Ireland, where they worked to keep the Dodds Orchard safe and running.
